Elyria Catholic eager for shot at state
EC is trying to become the first team in school history to play in the state tournament and the first in Lorain County since Amy Manco's Avon Lake Shoregals won it all in 1994. Other than Avon Lake's back-to-back appearances in 1993-94, the 1979 Elyria Pioneers are the only other county team to make state.

With Taylor McAllister and Imani Gordon combining for 46 points, Firestone did nothing to tarnish its high rankings and snap Lorain's winning streak at eight. Firestone, ranked fourth in The Plain Dealer Top 25 and sixth in last week's Division I state poll, improved to 17-0 when it sprinted to a 17-point first-quarter lead. Shanique Ogle led the Titans, ranked 24th in The Plain Dealer, with 16 points, and sophomore Alexandra Harris had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Sr. Danielle Herwig left the Midview Girls team right before the Christmas holiday. "I have no further comment except to say that Danielle will not be coming back," said first-year coach Scott Plzak.
Herwig was averaging 18 points and close to seven rebounds for Plzak, the former Southview coach who came to the school when Southview combined with Admiral King to form Lorain High.

The visiting Green Wave (9-2, 4-1), ranked 14th in The Plain Dealer Top 25 and 13th among Ohio's Division II teams, scored 10 straight points after the game was tied, 43-43, with less than three minutes left in the North Coast League crossover game.

Taylor Ratliff, G, 5-4, Sr., Columbia: Outstanding 3-point shooter. Averaged 14.8 points, with 48 treys, along with 3.3 rebounds.

Lake Ridge Academy (8-13 last year): With eight players transferring in from now-defunct Regina, the Lions can't help but be a Division IV state title contender, let alone end up being the school's best team ever.

Lorain (first-year team): Titans have two of the state's best post players in 6-1 Bowling Green recruit Shanique Ogle (from Southview) and 6-3 Alex Harris (from Admiral King).

Elyria Catholic (21-5, Division III regional finalist): Walsh recruit Emily Taylor and Ashley Schuster hope to lead the defending NCL White Division co-champions to their first Division III state tournament appearance.

The rundown: Amherst graduated seven seniors from last season, including Lizzie Soto, Bridget Cruz and Marissa Thomas. The Comets entered the district tournament as the No. 2 seed, but fell to Elyria in the district semifinal ... Despite just being a sophomore, Shagovac will lead the team from the guard position ... Porostosky, Rositano and Madera will be expected to provide experience and leadership this season.

Avon

Coach: Meghan Banks

Last year: 15-7

Key returners: Mackenzie Brua (Sr.), Brianne Kistler (Sr.), Cora Cachat (Jr.), Emily Julius (Jr.), Natalie Wilden (Jr.).

The rundown: The Eagles and coach Meghan Banks expect to be a strong defensive team with great team speed ... Offensively, the team will look to run a quick-paced set and beat opponents to spots ... Replacing six seniors will be a tough task for the Eagles to complete, four of which were starters, but the team will rely on returners Mackenzie Brua and Brianne Kistler ... Lastly, the coaching staff will be implementing a new offensive and defensive scheme so there could be some growing pains along the way.

Avon Lake

Coach: Frank Coughlin

Last year: 15-7, 8-6 SWC

Key returners: Lacy LeDuc (Jr.), Natalie Szocs (Sr.), Kim Zelonis (Jr.), Claire Guerin (Sr.).

The rundown: The Shoregals plan to take a deliberate and slow approach this season and try to avoid getting into high-scoring affairs against the opposition ... They’ll be looking to maintain ball possession and create extra offensive possession by employing a full-court press ... In order for the Shoregals to have a successful season, coach Frank Coughlin expects Natalie Szocs to have an impressive year.

Brookside

Coach: Ray Mariner (2nd year as head coach)

Last year: 9-12 (3rd place in PAC Stars)

Key returners: Hillary Verlato (Sr.), Haylee Kloeppel (Sr.), Gabby Piwowar (Jr.), Jeanine Musall (Jr.), Kendyl O’Neal (Jr.).

The rundown: Brookside graduated five seniors and lacks height, but will look to be a fast, up tempo team that will push the ball ... The Cardinals will be looking to pick up the scoring slack, after graduating Bri Mills ... Piwowar is the team’s best long-distance shooter. She shot 35 3-pointers last season ... Musall is a post player, and averaged almost nine rebounds per game last season ... Verlato and Kloeppel are expected to be the team’s leaders this season ... Selena Kauffman, who recently signed to play softball at CSU, is playing basketball for the first time this season ... Julie Andorka, a junior, is back a year after ACL surgery.

Clearview

Coach: Nick Dimacchia (3rd year)

Last year: 9-11

Key returners: Alexis Renney (Jr.), Jasymn Hartman (Jr.), Alexis Arend (Jr.), Lauren Kokinda (Jr.).

The rundown: Kelsey Fortney, Alexis Renney and Tamera McCoy are expected to be the Clippers’ team leaders this season. The Clippers are young and experienced with only three players returning from last year’s team in Alexis Renney, Lauren Lokinda and Fortney ... The coaching staff is looking to this season as a good way to build a foundation for the next two years to come ... One thing the team needs to work for a successul season is finishing at the basket as they will play some tough opponents this season in Lorain, Amherst and Elyria Catholic, which should provide some growing pains for the team ...

Columbia

Coach: Larry Babics (5th year)

Last year: 17-6 (12-1 PAC)

Key returners: Danielle Riolo, Taylor Ratliff, Alayna Shawver, Angie Gibbons, Bridgette Berger

The rundown: The Raiders won their third consecutive sectional title and second straight Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division championship, but graduated four seniors, including Emily Nagle, who left the school as the No. 2 all-time leading scorer ... Christine Lyzen, Kaley Marshall, Emma Sullivan and Jenna Guth are also returning players with varsity experience ... Ratliff, Riolo and Shawver are expected to lead the Raiders this season ... Ratlif, who is 95 points away from 1,000, is the school’s all-time leading 3-point shooter with 94 ... Shawver is considered defensive oriented, while Riolo can draw fouls and get to the free-throw line.

Elyria Team Preview

Coach: Mike Walsh (15th year)

Last year: 9-14

Key returners: Nais Williams (Sr.), Sanita Seymore (Sr.), Quae Brown (Sr.), Anastasia Barnhill (Jr.), Bergen Read (Jr.), Mary Jones (So.).

The rundown: The Pioneers have six returning players with starting varsity experience. Despite a rocky season, Elyria was one win away from making a regional appearance last season. They defeated Akron Ellet and Amherst, before falling to Cloverleaf in the district final ... Williams, Seymore and Jones are expected to lead the team this season ... Senior Kaleigh Plato and juniors Justin Cabbil, Raeshawn Stephens, Kandace Woolbright are also expected to contribute this season ... Twinsburg and Hudson are the early favorites in the NOL - Valley Divsion.

Elyria Catholic Team Preview

Coach: Eric Rothgery (3rd year)

Last year: 21-5

Key returners: Emily Taylor (Sr.), Ashley Schuster (Sr.), Tory Rothgery, Myrasia Flowers, Juliana Tremont.

The rundown: The Panthers return key players point guard Emily Taylor and center Ashley Schuster as pillars for another run in the playoffs ... The team also returns shooters Rothgery Flowers, and Brittney McNamara to stretch the floor to give Schuster room to operate in the paint ... The coaching staff believes they should be the early favorite to win our conference.

Firelands

Coach: Dave Kudela (9th year)

Last year: 8-13, WSC 3-11

Key returners: Alie Gillen (Sr.), Jen Newman (Sr.), Kayla Young (Sr.), Kayleigh Vogel (Sr.), Megan Kudela (Jr.)

The rundown: Filling the void left by standout Theresa Davis is going to be the toughest part for the Falcons this season. To do so, the team is going to try and spread the floor and make cuts to the basket for some easy baskets along the way — it’s going to require a complete team effort for the Falcons to have success this season ... Defensively, the team is sound, but the concern is running a successful offense this season.

Keystone

Coach: Scott Terry (11th year)

Last year: 14-8 (11-2 PAC)

Key returners: Emily Nagle (Jr.), Kenzie Conrad (Jr.), Karli Sturgill (Sr.), Mallory Nagle (Jr.).

The rundown: The Wildcats won the PAC with an 11-2 mark and are expected to win the PAC again this season ... Terry has a lot of quickness on the team this season and plans to play up tempo ... Sturgill is the team’s captain ... Nagy and Conrad, both juniors, are the players to watch this season.

Lake Ridge

Coach: Keesha Allen (1st year)

Last year: 8-13

Key returners: Erin Maldonado (Sr.); Regina transfers: senior Kourtni Taylor, junior Davonna Bradford, sophomores Taylor Character, Kyndall Wellons, Sharday Baines, Martha Thompson, Sydney Clark and Monet Saunders.

The rundown: Allen was Pat Diulus’ top assistant at Regina last season. Regina, the South Euclid school had to close because of financial struggles ... Eight former Regina players transferred to Lake Ridge and will make up the nucleus of the Lions team ... Lake Ridge is an instant state-power with transfers such as Davonna Bradford and Kourtni Taylor ... With the athleticism that came with the Regina transfers, Coach Allen plans to play up tempo.


Lorain High Team Preview

Coach: Mark Feldmann (1st year)

Last year: Southview 16-9; Admiral King 9-12.

Key returners: Shanique Ogle (Sr.), Alexandria Harris (So.), Madison Stoyka (Jr.), Jessica Fields (Jr.), Breanna Fortney (Jr.).

The rundown: The Lorain High girls will be led by front-court players Shanique Ogle and Alexandria Harris in addition to having a deep squad consisting of players from the now defunct Southview and Admiral King high schools ... The team is taking a defense-first mentality in hopes that will open fast-break opportunities on the offensive end.

Midview

Coach: Scott Plzak (1st year) - coached previously at Admiral King

Last year: 3-18

Key returners: Danielle Herwig (Sr.), Olivia Smith (Sr.), Brooke Davis (Sr.), Holly Benetto (Jr.), Justice Perkins (Jr.).

The rundown: After a difficult season last season, first-year head coach Scott Plzak has his work cut out for him, but does expect his team to make significant strides this season ... Plzak and the team are taking a defense-first approach in hopes of creating turnovers and extra offensive opportunities this season ... The Middies, however, lack size up front and lack a true frontline post player ... Plzak senses his team growing more and more hungry for wins with each practice.

North Ridgeville

Coach: Amy Esser (3rd year)

Last year: 8-13

Key returners: Hailey Schroeder (Sr.), Alexis McGhee (Sr.) , Jamie Fletcher (Sr.), Ashley Butcher (Sr.), Ashley Montgomery (Jr.).

The rundown: The Rangers plan to run an upbeat, quick-style offense this season, using energy players Jamie Fletcher and Alexis McGhee. McGhee will be key on the back boards and in and around the 10 to 15 foot range ... Three-point shooting specialists Hailey Schroeder and Ashley Montgomery will enable the Rangers to spread the floor against opponents, too ... Of their nine varsity players, six solely dedicate their talents to basketball as five of those six participate in AAU in the offseason ... Coach Amy Esser wants to see improvement in her team’s ability to close out games down the stretch and that the team believes it can contend for a conference championship.

Oberlin

Coach: Chris Frank (1st year)

Last year: 12-8 (7-6 PAC)

Key returners: Kayla Jackson (Jr.), Asia Alston (Jr.), Brenna Baylock (Jr.), Aungie Owens (So.).

The rundown: Frank enter his first year as head coach of the girls. Frank was the boys coach from 2003-’06. He was also the assistant coach at Avon from 2006-’08. He plans to instruct an aggressive, up tempo style of play on both ends ... Jackson is the player to watch for the Phoenix this season ... Kymaia Gadsden is expected to be team’s defensive stopper ... Cynthia Hand and Carol Dent are seniors that are expected to help the Phoenix this season ... Oberlin has a very young team and will rely on playing aggressive, according to Frank.


Open Door

Coach: Bud Turner (3rd year)

Last year: 1-12

Key returners: Briana Rogers (Sr.), Brook Camera (So.), Katie Howard (Sr.), Danielle Turner (So.), Alexis Werley (So.)

The rundown: The Patriots’ only win last season came against First Baptist, who won’t have a team this year. Coach Turner hopes to outwork and earn respect of his opponents this season ... Juniors Becca Miksa and Anna Sheeter are new to the team this season ... Turner, Werley and Allison Courtney are sophomores that had varsity experience last season as freshmen ... Rogers is expected to lead the Patriots at the guard position ... Open Door’s schedule includes teams such as East Tech, Fuchs Mizrachi, Brookside, Black River, Christian Community School and New Day Academy.

Vermilion

Coach: Steve Kelly (2nd year)

Last year: 13-8, 8-6 WSC

Key returners: AuBree LaForce (So.), Bridget Brown (Jr.), Hannah Bartlome (Fr.), AJ Green (Sr.), Alyssa O’Bryon (Sr.).

The rundown: The Sailors return two letterwinners in AuBree LaForce and Bridget Brown as they look to build upon last season’s solid performance ... Vermilion boasts a nice blend of youth and experience on their roster, including two underclassmen in its projected starting lineup, namely LaForce (sophomore) and freshman Hannah Bartlome (freshman) ... Offensively, the Sailors are looking to get out run the floor, but are willing to slow it down into half-court set when the situation presents itself ... One aspect is to get out and run, but to play under control and make better decisions ... Defensively, the is looking to create turnovers to give way to extra offensive possessions.

Wellington

Coach: Marty Yonkof (2nd year at Wellington, 30th overall)

Last year: 4-17 (4-9 PAC)

Key returners: Victoria Reisinger (Jr.), Erica George (Sr.), Jessica Davis (Sr.), Courtney Kurtz (Sr.), Laura Clark (Sr.), Olivia Wulfhoop (Jr.).

The rundown: The Dukes’ style of play will be pressure man-to-man with a fast break offense. Wellington isn’t very tall, but has good team speed ... Wellington expects to turn things around from its four-win season a year ago ... Kurtz, Davis and Wulfhoop, along with Clark and Reisinger at the post, round out the Dukes’ starting five this season ... George gives Wellington a good defensive player off the bench with the ability to score.
