Other top players to watch

Team Capsules:
Amherst Comets

Coach: John Srnis

Last year’s record: 7-16

Returning players: Shakeem Jones, Austin Zink

Style of play: Amherst will have a wait and see approach and play to the strengths of its personnel as the season goes on with just two letterwinners coming back from last year.

The Rundown: The Comets have played inspired basketball at the past two district tournaments. Beating a talented Strongsville team at Midview last season shows what the Comets are capable of with a hard-nosed squad that is easy to coach. The SWC will be a grind but as the past two postseasons have shown, Srnis’ teams can win on any given night.

Style of play: Baker wants his team to play pressure defense, which he hopes will kick start the team’s transition offense led by Kauffman, who led Lorain County in scoring.

The Rundown: With nine letterwinners returning the Eagles have very high expectations. Coach Baker said the team’s goals are to win their holiday tournament, the conference and district championships.

Avon Lake Shoremen Team Preview

Coach: Eric Smith(5th year)

Last year's record: 17-8, Division I regional semifinalist

Returning players: Ronnie Willoughby, Trent Toy, Andrew Bohan, Jay Seaton, Eric Stuczynski

Style of play: Avon Lake plays a pressure style on both ends. They will play good defense and push the ball but with a seasoed point guard in Murway can get into half court if an early shot isn’t there.

The Rundown: It’s a tough conference, but the Shoremen could win their first SWC title since 1994 if they reach their full potential. Not many teams return as much talent as Avon Lake coming back or the experience of making a run to the regional semifinals. The Shoremen will be challenged with a tough schedule chock full of Lorain County’s finest teams, but they should be up to the task with one of the best teams coming back.

Plain Dealer rundown: Athleticism and a high basketball IQ make the Shoremen a solid group once again. Ronnie Willoughby leads a talented senior nucleus.

The Rundown: Despite losing some talent to graduation, Brookside is getting lots of respect around the league as a team that could win the Stars Division. A trip to the district semifinals last season was another step in the progression of the program under Schremp. This year, they’ll try to get above .500 for the first time since 1991 and compete for a conference title as well as make some noise in the district tournament again.

Coach: Greg Morgan (17th)

Last year’s record: 12-9

The Rundown: The Wildcats only return two starters from last season and lack some scoring, but will have good size with Wagner (6-foot-2), Schillace (6-3), Dill (6-4) and Robinson (6-5). Coach Morgan said his team is very athletic and if they can play as a cohesive unit they could cause teams problems.
