Oberlin | Power Poll

Devin Gabriel has been a consistent player on an in consistent team. The 6-2 junior from Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville is averaging 23.7 points and 11 rebounds a game for the Lions (6-9). Gabriel transferred from Elyria before the start of the season and should be a player to watch in Division IV next year.

"He really should be a guard, but we have to play him at forward at 6-2," said coach Bernie Clark. "He has been very efficient. He can shoot it from the perimeter but he also can go inside. He is a very well-rounded player. Great kid, good student. One of those special kids.

A series of events on Friday helped Midview clinch its first West Shore Conference title since 2007 -- earlier than anticipated. After the Middies had won at Vermilion, 61-49, to raise their record to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the conference, they learned Bay senior Bryan Lowrie had made a 40-foot shot at the buzzer to beat Avon, 54-51, knocking the Eagles out of contention. Midview, 16-2 entering Feb. 17 game against future WSC foe Lakewood, has won 14 games in a row and earned the No. 2 seed at the Division I sectional at Brecksville behind St. Edward. Bay had lost to Avon by 37 points in the first meeting, making the victory even the more surprising.

WSC Review
Midview hasn't lost in exactly two months, when the Middies fell at Elyria on Dec. 10 when the Pioneers opened their new gym. Since then, Troy DiFranco's team has been unstoppable, winning 13 straight games and closing in on a West Shore championship, but Avon is not going away quietly. The Eagles are 1 1/2 games back of Midview for first place and they will play on Feb. 24 at Midview. The Middies beat Avon 52-48 at Avon earlier in the season. Midview's magic number to clinch the West Shore is two, meaning any combination of Midview wins or Avon losses that equals two means the Middies win the WSC. Their senior class led by Eddie Brezina and Riley Moore has been sensational all season long and would love to cap off an amazing year with a conference championship.

PAC Review
Both divisions of the PAC hold very entertaining two-team races jockeying for first place. In the Stripes Division, one team is rolling while the other seems to be fading down the stretch. Columbia started off the season hot, winning five of their first six PAC games. Since then, the Raiders are just 2-4 in the conference, including a two-point loss to first place Oberlin. The Phoenix, on the other hand, are finishing the season strong. Since starting 0-4 in the conference, coach Kurt Russell's team has won their last eight games. The two teams split their meetings this year, and each team faces the bottom four teams of the Stripes Division the rest of the way. They are now tied atop the Stripes Division after an Oberlin loss. The race for the Stars Division is one of two very different teams — defensive-minded Keystone and run-and-gun Wellington. Even though the Dukes fell to Keystone the first time these teams have met, the Wildcats have been plagued by the upset bug, as they have fallen to both Clearview and Fairview. Wellington stands a game ahead of Keystone for first place with three games left in the season. All roads seem to lead to their Feb. 21 rematch at Keystone. First-year coach Dan Gundert and the Dukes control their own destiny as they look to claim their second Stars Division title in the last three years.

Other area players

Team Capsules:
Amherst Comets
Coach: John Srnis
Last year record: 4-18
Key Returners: Marcus Schmitz (sr.), Griffin Weir (jr.), Nick Glowacki (jr.), Garrett Klekota (soph.)
The rundown: John Srnis' Comets hope to rebound after a very tough 2010-11 season in which they only won four games…Amherst has eight newcomers onto this year's squad as they try to bounce back. Griffin Weir looks to be the go-to man in the offense after averaging 8.4 points per game as a sophomore last year.

Avon Eagles
Coach: Jim Baker
Last year: 14-7 (lost in sectional finals)
Key returners: Claude Gray (sr.), Ryan Poyle (sr.), Mike Maloney (sr.)
The rundown: Heading into their first season of Division I basketball, the Eagles have their work cut out for them replacing the production of star guard R.J. Kauffman. The combo of seniors Gray and Poyle along with a slew of talented young players make Avon a contender in the West Shore again this season...Gray, who averaged 13.5 ppg and 8 rebounds per night, is expected to be the main scorer with his versatility and athleticism.

Avon Lake Shoremen Team Preview
Coach: Eric Smith
Last year: 19-2 (lost in sectional finals)
Key returners: Eric Stuczynski (sr.), Brandon Murwary (sr.)
The rundown: The Shoremen were red hot last season, winning their first 19 games of the season. But the final week was a tough one as they lost their last two games, including a sectional final game to Berea...Stuczynski and Murwary will be counted upon to help lead an Avon Lake team that is young and inexperienced, but has plenty of talent. Stuczynski was first-team All-SWC last season, averaging 12.3 ppg and Murwary will run the offensive from the point, after averaging 5 assists per game a season ago...Smith believes the thing that will help Avon Lake win another SWC title is their committment to aggressive defense. Stuczynski and Murwary are joined by Logan Dilik, 6-4 sophomore Brad Hamilton and 6-5 senior Zach Scott.

Brookside Cardinals
Coach: Brent Schremp
Last year: 9-12 (lost in first round)
Key returners: Hunter Skolnicki (sr.), Matt Gorta (sr.), Keyonte Francis (sr.), Justin Lopez (sr.)
The rundown: Coach Schremp's Cardinals have plenty of senior leadership that they hope will translate into more wins in the PAC...Skolnick is the big scorer on this team, averaging 14.1 ppg and is a fantastic shooter. Francis runs the offense and will need to help get everybody involved to continue their push to try to win a PAC championship...Big forwards Nathan Keith and Kelvin Jones, both of whom were on JV last year, add major size to the middle of the Brookside lineup.

Columbia Raiders
Coach: Matt Sheets
Last year: 7-14 (lost in first round)
Key returners: John Banyasz (sr.), Jacob Simon (jr.), Jacob Klienhenz (soph.)
The rundown: Matt Sheets' Raiders hope to end their drought of not having a winning season in over a decade...First-team All-PAC John Banyasz will need to come up big again for Columbia after averaging 13 points, five rebounds and five assists per game as a junior. Sophomore Jacob Klienhenz is another player to keep an eye on after he shot 55 percent from the field as a freshman last season.

Elyria Pioneers Team Preview
Coach: Brett Larrick
Last year: 12-9 (lost in sectional finals)
Key returners: Kody Bender (jr.), Anthoni Horton (sr.), Khire Lateef (sr.), Demetrius Walton (sr.), Rodney Beckett (sr.)
The rundown: Elyria has been a young team for some time, but this year could be a time that this group matures and performs very well for coach Larrick...Bender returns for his third season on varsity after averaging 16 ppg to lead the team. Coach Larrick said Bender has worked hard to get stronger to be able to better withstand the physicality of the game...Senior leadership from Horton and Lateef will be important for the Pioneers to succeed in an NOC that added Mentor to go along with basketball power Garfield Heights...basketball players Walton and Dustin Stolarski will also be counted on as major contributors this season.

Elyria Catholic Panthers
Coach: Phil Kuchta
Last year: 4-18
Key returners: Andrew Konno (sr.), Matt Morgan (sr.), Joe Dempsey (sr.), MJ Lotko (sr.)
The rundown: EC begins their first season in the West Shore looking for a go-to scoring option to help jumpstart their offense...Experience is not an issue with the Panthers as they have nine letterwinners on the roster. Sophomore center Jeremy Holley is a player to keep an eye on, as he spent half of his freshman year on the junior varsity team, but averaged 11.9 ppg in his team's last eight games.

Firelands Falcons
Coach: Steve Lias
Last year: 4-17
Key returners: Kyle Smith (sr.), Cody Northeim (sr.), Joey Ritz (sr.), Joe Hyster (jr.), Nick Deichler (sr.)
The rundown: The Falcons will be hoping for better success this season as they leave the West Shore Conference behind for the PAC...Smith comes back as the team's leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points, 3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game last year en route to being named first-team All-Lorain County. Coach Lias believes his team has the experience with seven returning lettermen and all five returning starters to make a run in the PAC.

Keystone Wildcats Team Preview
Coach: Greg Morgan
Last year: 10-10
Key returners: Caleb Schillace (sr.), Brandyn Sittinger (sr.), Brandon Osborne (sr.)
The rundown: Coach Morgan and the Wildcats hope to bounce back from a tough 10-10 season with a team loaded with experience and versatility. Schillace is the defending PAC Player of the Year, averaging 17.1 ppg and 13.2 rebounds per game as a junior last season. The wing player has the versatility his coach says to defend almost every position on the court...Senior guards Brandyn Sittinger, who averaged 12.5 ppg, and Brandon Osborne, scoring 7.9 ppg last year, are going to be the other players to watch on a very deep Wildcat team...Keystone has moved down to Division III this season.

Lorain High Titans Team Preview
Coach: Andy Bastock
Last year: 15-9 (lost in district finals)
Key returners: Mike Davila (sr.), Brandon Davis (sr.), Jerome Golson (sr.), Teddy Wilson (sr.), Louis Cheers (jr.), A.J. Craighead (sr.), Demetrius Bennett (sr.).
The rundown: Andy Bastock's Titans had a very successful first season after Southview and Admiral King combined a year ago. In year two, the Titans look just as strong but their depth will be tested after Mike Davila suffered a torn ACL in practice...Davila will play and wear an ACL brace, but it's unclear how strong he will be. Davis and Golson will need to help lead the way on a Titan team that loves to run up and down the court...Bastock's team has plenty of athleticism and quickness, and they will be tested by a very challenging and deep LEL. The Titans have an outstanding 3-point threat in senior guard Mike Davila and good size in 6-4 Jerome Golson, 6-5 Louis Cheers and 6-6 Teddy Wilson.

Midview Middies
Coach: Tony DiFranco (15th year)
Last year: 12-9
Key returners: Patrick Lynn (sr.), Riley Moore (sr.), Eddie Brezina (sr.)
The rundown: The Middies hope that continuing to improve on team chemistry and playing better defense will help improve their record...The senior combination of Patrick Lynn, Riley Moore and Eddie Brezina will be relied upon as the Middies look to build off of their 12-9 record and challenge for the top spot in the WSC.

North Ridgeville Rangers
Coach: Bill Noggle
Last Year: 10-12 (lost in second round)
Key Returners: Andrew Sismour (sr.)
The rundown: The Rangers have a rebuilding project on their hands as they only return one letter winner this season in a deep WSC conference…Forward Andrew Sismour will need to lead the way for a North Ridgeville team that does have some seniors, but has the most experience of any player on the roster. Coach Noggle said he hopes his team is able to get a good amount of experience to set themselves up for next season.

Oberlin Phoenix
Coach: Kurt Russell
Last year: 11-9 (lost in sectionals)
Key returners: Dominic Taylor (sr.), Trevon Tucker (sr.) Jason Moore (jr.), Noland Isom (jr.)
The rundown: Coach Russell's team is very deep in scorers, as their four best returners each averaged better than nine points per game last season. Trevon Tucker averaged 11.3 points last season starting at center, while Jason Moore and Dominic Taylor can light up the scoreboard on the wings...Russell hopes his team can build off of their solid season and make an impact in the PAC.

Vermilion Sailors
Coach: Kurt Habermehl (13th year)
Last year: 9-13 (lost in sectional finals)
Key returners: Jordan Gillespie (sr.), Cameron Kuhn (so.)
The rundown: Vermilion has quite a bit to replace this season, with the losses of several top players from last year's team. Coach Kabermehl said he wants his team to improve in handling tough game situations...Cameron Kuhn returns for his second season after having a good freshman season for the Sailors, averaging 8.9 points per game.

Wellington Dukes
Coach: Dan Gundert
Last year: 10-13 (lost in district semifinals)
Key returners: Jason Perry (sr.), Nathan Starkey (sr.), Brady Shaw (sr.), Zac Gilbert (sr.), Nathan Gray (sr.)
