The Pirates, making their first post-season appearance since 2003, used a dominating rushing attack and an opportunistic defense to defeat the Panthers for the second time this season. Black River was victorious over Manchester in week 3 by a score of 29-28. That game Pirates QB Dakota Kuntz passed for a school-record 263 yards and four touchdowns.
Last night, Kuntz wasn't called upon to throw as often for Black River thanks to sophomore running back Andrew Vaughn who ran 23 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns. He was helped by junior Austin Phillips (13-148) who had two scores himself and senior Jake Sexton (4-48) who scored the first Pirate touchdown and later recorded an interception.
Manchester QB Nick Peyakov entered the game with 2166 yards passing (132-233 57%), 25 touchdowns and just one interception but was rattled throughout the night completing just 22 of 50 for 308 yards. Panther running back Tyler Graves was averaging 182 yards on the ground the last four weeks was limited to just 75 yards on 15 carries.
With the victory, Black River Coach Al Young ties retired Brunswick coach Rich Nowak for most Medina County career victories (152 games).
