With a name like Barkevious Mingo, he has to be a Dawg

The Cleveland Browns selected Barkevious Mingo with the 6th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. The defensive end from LSU recorded 38 tackles (8.5 for losses) and 4.5 sacks in 2012. Mingo is a quick pass rusher at 6-4, 241 pounds, and ran 4.6 40-yard dash. He was 2nd-team all-SEC as a junior.

In 3 seasons, Mingo recorded a total of 15 sacks to go with 119 career tackles, 4 forced fumbles and 11 pass deflections.

Although he played DE in college, the Browns would use him as an OLB. With Paul Kruger at one OLB and Mingo at the other OLB, the Browns hope they can now rush the passer which Cleveland hasn't had since Jamir Miller.

Barkevious Mingo was given his first name when his mom (Barbara) combined her name with a name she liked (Kevious)

The knock on Mingo is he didn't live up to expectations in Baton Rouge. Only 4.5 sacks a year ago after 7 sacks in 2011. His size has raised some concerns as his lean frame could mean he gets pushed around. He weighed 241 at the combine and he insists he can add another 20 pounds.

I'm really curious as to where Mingo was rated on Cleveland's draft board. The Browns need Mingo to be a pass rusher and Mingo is considered the 3rd best edge rusher in this draft after Oregon OLB Dion Jordan (picked #3) and BYU DE Ezekiel Ansah (picked #5).

The Browns will say Mingo was their guy all along. I'm not sure he is a true fit in the new Cleveland defense. Time will tell to see how new defensive coordinator Ray Horton uses Mingo, Kruger, Jabaal Sheard and Quintin Groves.

Despite all of the talk of the Browns picking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner or West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith or trading down for a position other than outside linebacker, the Browns keep with their mission of winning with a guy who plays QB well and stopping the other teams' QB.

It appears the Browns have their man. Let's hope this new Dawg's bite is worse than their bark.

Winners

Chip Kelly: With Miami jumping in front of Philadelphia to select Dion Jordan, takes Kelly off the hook. At #4, he could draft whoever he wanted without the pressure of having to select the guy he coached when the two of them were in Oregon.

St. Louis: The Rams needed a receiver badly, they coveted West Virginia WR Tavon Austin. The Rams moved up to #8 and picked him.

Jets fans: If there is ever a given at NFL Draft. The Jets fans in attendance will boo their first round pick. Dee Milliner will not make the New York faithful forget Darrelle Revis.

Alabama: Three straight picks #9-#11 (Dee Milliner, Chance Warmack, DJ Fluker). Prior to the draft, the rumor was Alabama players were just beat up and full of injuries (Milliner’s 5 surgeries, Warmack's right shoulder, Fluker's left shoulder, Eddie Lacy's toe, Jesse Williams' knee). Three picks in the top 11 proves once again Alabama is the premier program in college football.

Oakland: Houston CB DJ Hayden was linked to Oakland all week. The Raiders traded down and still got the man they wanted.

Buffalo: They traded with St. Louis to drop from #8 to #16 to select FSU EJ Manuel. Not only did they find a QB to replace the departed Ryan Fitzpatick, they picked up an extra draft pick.

Andy Dalton: The Cincinnati QB has another weapon at his disposal with the Bengals selecting Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert. WR AJ Green may also see less double teams on the outside.

Minnesota: Three first round picks for a team that went to the play-offs a year ago. First they selected a falling Sharrif Floyd (#23, DT, Florida), then Xavier Rhodes (#25, CB, FSU) and finally trading back into the first round to pick Cordarrelle Patterson (#29, WR, UT). The best part is all three players fill a need especially Patterson who replaces Percy Harvin who was traded to Seattle.

Losers

Jabaal Sheard: With the Browns selecting Barkevious Mingo, Sheard is without a position. After two solid years as a 4-3 DE, Sheard was trying to make the switch right outside linebacker. With Mingo and Kruger at OLB, Sheard is the odd man out.

Miami: Lane Johnson seemed like an obvious choice after trading up to #3. To still leave a gaping hole at left tackle, with the departure of Jake Long to St. Louis, isn't doing QB Ryan Tannehill any favors.

Detroit: Taking a big risk in picking BYU DE Ezekiel Ansah. Maybe he turns into Jason Pierre-Paul maybe he turns into Courtney Brown

Kevin Kolb: The QB for Buffalo just lost his starting position when the Bills selected FSU QB EJ Manuel at #16.

Sharrif Floyd: The DT from Florida was originally thought to be picked as high as #3 was this year’s free-fall finally landing at #23 to Minnesota. Dropping deep in the draft didn’t hurt Aaron Rodgers. Brady Quinn was not so fortunate.
