Firelands vs. Wellington tonight

I will be covering high school football tonight in Wellington, Ohio as the Dukes host the Firelands Falcons. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and sideline reporter Dave Andrews.

What a difference a year makes. Both these teams were in the play-offs a year. Firelands qualified as the 8th and final seed in Division 3, Region 9 while Wellington earned the 8th spot in Division 4, Region 14. Fast forward to 2012 and neither team is going to the post-season. Firelands is still looking for their win of the year while Wellington earned their first victory defeating Clearview 43-13 last week.

Although both teams are struggling this year and both made the play-offs last year, the two schools have had vastly different levels of success.

Firelands

Although the Falcons have many seniors, most are inexperienced. For tonight's game, coach Mike Passarello will start three players who played significant time last year. One of the new starters is QB Joe Hyster who is 40 of 79 passing for 342 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has carried the ball 56 times for 278 yars and a TD. Leading rusher is freshman Aaron Stevanus who has 164 yards on the ground after gaining 87 last week in a 28-6 loss vs. Oberlin.

Wellington

The Dukes had a break-out game last week against Clearview. Senior QB Dylan Weidrick led the way with 21 carries for 194 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He had help from junior Quinton Dendinger (20-171 rushing, 2 TDs) and senior Alex Rush (14-87 rushing).

Both teams are battling injuries. Wellington lost their starting center and defensive tackle Ryan Alspach to right shoulder surgery and starting running back and linebacker Chase Bealer to a right leg stress fracture. Firelands is missing three offensive and defensive linemen: Travis Alexander (broken finger), Jake Grasso (high ankle sprain) and Chris DeWitt, torn ACL in right knee. All but Grasso is expected to miss the rest of the year.
