Elyria's Fell, Lorain's Solis and Firelands' Passarello named new football head coaches

February is here and January was a big month for Lorain County high school football coaching changes. Here's a recap.

Mark Solis, Lorain

This hire is a big win for the city of Lorain. Coach Solis has been a winner everywhere he has been including Ashland Crestview from 1999-2004 (42-11, two play-off appearances), Elyria from 2005-2007 (20-12, one trip to play-offs) and Twinsburg from 2008-2010 (32-14, three appearances). If Solis can win at Elyria, he can win at Lorain.

Solis replaces Todd Auvil who was let go after a 2-8 record in the first year of Lorain Titan football. Prior to that Auvil coached Lorain Southview to 4-26 record. Solis is a welcomed change compared to what Lorain fans have watched the few years or even the last 25 years.

Mark Solis coached teams play fast-break football. They line up five wide and try to take advantage of their speed and athletic ability. Solis has also been a developer of quarterbacks. His last two signal-callers at Twinsburg , Aaron Macer and Cory Dean were studs. When was the last time Lorain had a stud quarterback? When was the last time a Todd Auvil coached team had a quarterback finish the year? The best teams in Lorain County last year had solid quarterback play so it's time for Lorain to get with the times. The Mark Solis offense has been successful in Division 1 (94-37 career record) and now he brings his program to Lorain with where he'll have twice as many kids as he had at Twinsburg.

Michael Polevacik, Elyria Catholic

Coach Polevacik was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Panthers. He replaces Ben Malbassa who leaves EC for the head coaching position at Benedictine.

If the athletic department wanted the success from the 10-win 2010 season to carry forward into next year, it made sense to promote from within. The Coach Malbasa system is firmly in place. Expect more of the fast-break football that we've grown accustomed to.

Plenty of changes in store for Elyria Catholic next year. Michael Polevacik will need to find the next Danny Reaser, Zach Rogers and Cory Campbell. He will have to deal with the sanctions the program received by the Ohio High School Athletic Association last season for recruiting violations. The Panthers are also moving to the West Shore Conference from the North Coast Conference.

Kevin Fell, Elyria

Like Mark Solis, Kevin Fell is another coach that has had success wherever he has gone. Like Mark Solis, Kevin Fell takes over at a school that is historically irrelevant and plays in a bad conference. Like Mark Solis, Kevin Fell is a huge win for the school and the city.

Elyria Athletic Director Jerry Chizmar is quoted as saying "We had many applicants for the position of head football coach and from the start, Kevin Fell's resume really stood out." No kidding his resume stands out, Fell has a career record of 234-111-2 and has been to the playoffs with every team he's coached and was inducted into the Ohio High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2008. He is the only Lakewood football coach to consistently beat St. Edward.

Fell's final record at Amherst in three seasons was 28-13 with one playoff appearance. His overall record is 234-111-2. He replaces Steve Hamilton who was fired after compiling an 11-29 record in four years. Fell inherits an offense with quarterback Dustin Stolarski, tailback Jumarr Lewis and wideouts Demetrius Walton and Myles Tyler all returning. The Pioneer defense was horrible last year despite having D-1 defensive player of the year, Chase Ferris.

Also like Mark Solis, Fell believes in scheduling nearby schools for non-conference opponents. Let's hope we see the Elyria/Elyria Catholic match-up continue as well as a rejuvenated Lorain/Elyria rivalry.

Mike Passarello, Firelands

Coach Pass was the Firelands defensive coordinator last year and took over for Todd Pooch during the 2010 season when Pooch faced criminal charges in Norwalk stemming from a Sept. 9 incident. Pooch resigned Sept. 21 and the charges were since dropped. Not only was Passarello pressed into the interim head coaching position just hours before the week 3 game against Keystone, he also lost a couple of key players to season-ending injuries.

Through all of the adversity and unfortunate circumstances, Passarello kept the team together and fought hard each and every game. The Falcons went 1-7 under Passarello, finishing 2010 with a 2-8 record (1-6 in Firelands final year in the West Shore Conference) but won their season finale over rival Vermilion for the first time in 18 years.

Ben Ohlemacher, Vermilion

It will seem strange to see someone other than Frank Horvath patrolling the sidelines next season. After resigning after their week 10 loss to Firelands, Horvath leaves behind a 29-year career. Ben Ohlemacher will add football coach to his already busy schedule as athletic director.

That leaves one remaining vacancy in the county with Amherst (Kevin Fell taking the head coaching job at Elyria) looking to fill an opening.
