Columbia runs past Fairview 40-15

Led by sophomore running back Brandon Coleman, the Columbia Raiders won convincingly 40-15 over the Fairview Warriors.

The match-up featured the two teams at the top of the Stripes Division of the Patriot Athletic Conference. With the win the Raiders (7-2, 4-0 PAC) are one win away from their 5th straight Stripes Division crown. The Warriors fall to 3-6 and 3-1 in the PAC.

Columbia raced out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter courtesy of Coleman's 5 TD run, Austin Sahlica 60 interception return and Lance Boise TD catch from quarterback Cody Schwartz.

Fairview got on the board when Josh Filkill found John McQuate along the Columbia sideline, then took it back toward the middle of the field and outraced the Columbia defense to the endzone. The Warriors was successful on their two point conversion when Filkill's jump pass was complete to a wide open Ryan Grealis.

On the next play from scrimmage, Fairview's Jack Provenza intercepted Schwartz and ran 35 yards to paydirt to get the Warriors closer 21-15 going into halftime.

After the break, Columbia took control of the game with two Coleman TD runs in the 3rd quarter. The first covered 70 yards in six plays and the second covered 41 yards in seven plays. All but one play were Coleman runs. After Fairview punted, Columbia put the game away. With Coleman on the bench, Mike Jacobucci took over at running back and then Schwartz threw his 2nd touchdown of the game finding Sahlica on and out route and turning upfield for a 59 yard touchdown.

Coleman finished with 245 yards rushing on 20 carries for a whooping 10 plus yards per attempt.

Fairview is on a roll. After losing their first five games by three or more touchdowns, the Warriors have won three straight including a 40-20 win last week over Clearview.  Head Coach Tom Narducci has announced the 2016 season will be his last; he is resigning at the end of his 6th season.

Columbia falls in District Semi-Finals

Columbia's magical season has come to crashing finish as the Patrick Henry Patriots throttle the Raiders 56-15 at Don Paul Stadium in Fremont, Ohio in a Division V Region 18 Semifinal. You can listen to the replay online.

Patrick Henry scored early. Taking the opening kickoff, the Patriots drove 80 yards in six plays capped by senior quarterback Gabe Jones 7-yard touchdown run. The subsequent kickoff bounced off a Columbia player before Patrick Henry's Brandon Cole recovered. The Patriots struck again on the next play when Jones found Josh Petersen for a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Down 13-0 with 9:31 left in the first quarter and Columbia hasn't run a play from scrimmage.

Columbia's Jay Banyasz runs past the competition

@_CHSFootball play the first Week 12 game in school history tomorrow and @JBanyasz8 has played a big role in making that happen.

It's been a special year for the Raiders, after losing the first game of the season 20-14 to Cleveland Central Catholic, Columbia has now won 10 straight which is the most in school history.

Particularly the last three weeks have been special: (1) a dominating 35-7 victory against Fairview, (2) a 51-25 win at Clearview to clinch the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division and (3) a 39-34 triumph in the first ever home play-off game in school history.

Banyasz leads Columbia to a historic win

@JBanyasz8 leads @_CHSFootball to victory once again. The 6-2, 170 pound junior quarterback Jay Banyasz ran 34 times for 271 yards and four touchdowns plus he completed 11 of 15 passes for another 168 yards and two more touchdowns. You can listen to the replay online.

Banyasz now on the season is over 1000 yard mark rushing having carried 160 times for 1009 yards and 17 touchdowns.

He has particularly turned it on in the last three weeks. In the victories over Fairview, Clearview and Archbold, Banyasz has 634 yards rushing and 13 of those touchdowns.

Archbold vs. Columbia tonight

The @_CHSFootball will host the first post-season football game in school history as they take on the Archbold Blue Streaks. I will be covering the high school football game for WOBL. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and sideline reporter Dave Andrews.

Columbia at Wellington tonight

I will be covering high school football tonight in Wellington, Ohio as the Dukes host the Columbia Raiders. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and sideline reporter Dave Andrews.

Both teams begin Patriot Athletic Conference play this evening and neither team is sure how good they are.

Columbia is 2-1 for the 4th straight season. From 2009 to 2011, the non-conference portion of their schedule is identical:
  • loss in week 1 to Cleveland Central Catholic (20-14 this year),
  • win in week 2 vs. South Central (40-0)
  • win in week 3 vs. Chippewa (28-7).
Wellington is 0-3 in their non-conference schedule dropping games against Norwayne (47-7), Avon (33-0) and Edison (35-20). Norwayne won the Division IV state championship last season while Avon finished as runners-up in Division II.

Lorain County Football Team Rankings

Three weeks of high school football are complete. Six schools are looking for their first win while only two are still undefeated.

Get your updated school schedules and standings. Here are my team rankings with their overall and conference records:
  1. Midview 3-0, 0-0 – The Middies have came up huge against Elyria last week. Cody Callaway-to-Eric Lauer is the most lethal passing combination in the county.

  2. Avon Lake 2-1, 0-0 – When was the last time a Dave Dlugosz team blew a 24-point halftime lead in losing in double overtime against Massillon Jackson. North Olmsted is next. Be very afraid Eagles.

  3. Elyria 2-1, 0-0 – Loss to Midview will bring the Pioneers back to earth. Still a lot of talent at the skills positions and defense to not have a successful season.

Final Lorain County Football Power Rankings

This week is a series of stories recapping the 2011 high school football season in Lorain county Ohio.
Here are my team rankings with their records, pre-season and mid-season rankings:
  1. Avon 13-2, (6-0 West Shore Conference), (1, 1) – The best school in Lorain County. The Eagles became the first Lorain-County school to play in a state championship game since 2004. The team used a 2010 week 11 loss to Sandusky and a 2011 week 10 loss to Lake Catholic as focus and motivation as they went through play-offs. Although the season ended in disappointment (42-28 loss to Trotwood-Madison), this Eagles team represented the city, county, and Northeast Ohio well.

  2. Avon Lake 8-2, (7-0 in Southwestern Conference), (2, 6) – Tough to put a non-playoff qualifer as the #2 team in this ranking but Avon Lake deserves it. The Shoremen were bumped up to Division I status by one student (494 boys) and thus had to compete in the perennially strong Region 2.. They still earned 23 computer which would been enough to get in the post-season in regions 1, 3 and 4. This year Shoremen team did have some solid players like Dontez Smith, Collin Lucas and Brett Bass but no superstars. They accomplished in 2011 what they always do -  win the SWC, their 17th conference title in 20 years under head coach Dave Dlugosz.

  3. Firelands 10-1, (7-0 in Patriot Athletic Conference, Stars Division), (14, 5) – The Falcons were by far the biggest feel-good story of the year. A team that won nine games over the previous seven years goes undefeated in the regular season and makes their first play-off appearance in school history. With nine seniors starting on offense and defense, several Falcon players such as QB Kyle Smith, RB Nick Deichler, WB Joe Kudela, DT Joe DeWitt, WR Cody Northeim, WR Jake Myers and TE Steve Bajcer had big seasons. The season ended abruptly in week 11 losing 66-14 at Chagrin Falls.

Lorain County Football Power Rankings

Six weeks of high school football are complete and six Lorain County teams have more wins in 2011 then all of last year.

Here are my team rankings with their records and pre-season rankings:
  1. Avon 6-0, 3-0 (1) – The best school in Lorain County. The Eagles have dominated the competition including a 42-7 win last week vs. Rocky River. Senior quarterback Justin O’Rourke has 906 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.

  2. Elyria 5-1, 2-1 (10) – If the season ended today, head coach Kevin Fell is coach-of-the-year. Dustin Stolarski has every school passing record this year.

  3. North Ridgeville 5-1, 2-1 (6) – Only loss was to Avon. Have a shot at their 2nd ever post-season appearance despite moving up to Division 1 for the first time this season.
