Columbia earns their Stripes

The Raiders used a dominating rushing attack in the 2nd half blowing open a close game and defeating the Clearview Clippers 51-25. You can listen to the replay online.

Columbia led by junior quarterback Jay Banyasz (23-161 and five touchdowns rushing, 132 yards and one touchdown passing) and junior Jacob Kleinhenz (17-80 one touchdown rushing).

The victory in the mud and rain at Tom Hoch field in Lorain Ohio gave the Raiders their 2nd Stripes Division title of the Patriot Athletic Conference. The win also assures Columbia of hosting their first play-off game in school history in Division V, Region 18.

Columbia got started early. Working on a short field after a nice punt return by Jesse Lambert, the Raiders scored on their play from scrimmage with Banyasz finding Austin Walaszewski in the endzone for a 18-yard touchdown. This started a back-n-forth 1st quarter with Clearview answering with a Chad Anderson 1-yard then a Banyasz 44-yard run and capping the quarter with Roger Engle 28-yard touchdown pass to Lance Billings. The first quarter ended with the Raiders up 14-13.

A key moment in the 2nd quarter came with Clearview up 19-14 when Engle threw a touchdown to Gerrell Williams. The play was called back by a penalty. After a couple more penalty flags against Clearview, the Clippers then had a bad snap to Engle in shotgun formation which led to Collumbia's Daniel Loub recovering at the 2-yard line. Banyasz ran in his 2nd touchdown of the night.

The two teams traded touchdowns again to put Columbia up 28-25. Clearview had a chance to take the lead before halftime but Loub sacked Engle deep in Columbia territory to thwart that opportunity.

The 2nd half was all Columbia, Banyasz would score three more times. Matt Zelinsky added a field goal to close it out.

Anderson finished with 175 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns. Engle started the evening 5-5 for 138 yards passing before cooling off and finishing 10-22 for 223 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Williams caught four passes for 134 yards and a touchdown.

In the last two weeks, Banyasz has rushed the ball 41 times for 363 yards and nine touchdowns.
