Black River at Grand Valley tonight

Black River and Grand Valley will tangle tonight in the opening round of the high school playoffs.

The Mustangs (9-1) qualified for the playoffs in 2015, hosting their first-ever home playoff game in program history. They lost that matchup to LaBrae in Week 11, 42-7.

Black River (7-3) needed a three-game winning streak to end the regular season to force its way into a playoff spot. The Pirates took second place in the Patriot Athletic Conference, Stars Division with a 3-2 record behind Buckeye, which made the playoffs in Division III, Region 9.

The Mustangs are looking to win the program’s first playoff game since the 1996 season, when the Mustangs advance all the way to the regional final round.

GV is Ashtabula County’s only playoff team for the second straight season and the area’s only postseason participant.

The winner of tonight's game with advance in the Division 5, Region 18 bracket facing the winner of Canton Central Catholic and Manchester.

Black River 43, Firelands 0

The Pirates used a dominating running attack to defeat the Firelands Falcons 43-0. You can listen to the replay online.

Black River was led by junior running back Andrew Vaughn (18-175 rushing, two touchdowns) and senior Austin Phillips (14-121 rushing, three touchdowns).

Things turned bad early for Firelands. Trying to punt deep in his own territory, freshman Brad Thrasher went down on one knee to catch a bad snap. Under high school rules, the ball carrier is ruled down. This gave Black River the ball on the Firelands 18. The first play from scrimmage for the Pirates turned into an 18-yard run for Vaughn less than a minute into the game.

Firelands at Black River tonight

Another big game in the PAC Stars Division tonight in Sullivan, Ohio as the Black River Pirates host the Firelands Falcons. I will be covering the high school football game for WOBL. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and sideline reporter Dave Andrews.

2011 Year in Review

This week is a series of posts recapping the 2011 season.
Here are the top stories of the 2011 Lorain County Ohio football season:
  1. Avon goes to State The Eagles made their first appearance in the football state championship game and the first Lorain-County school since 2004. Using a passing attack led by Justin O'Rourke (3168 yards passing, 40 touchdowns) and a running attack led by Ross Douglas (1019 yards rushing, 14 touchdowns), Avon was a well-balanced team offensively. Defensively, the team allowed 16 points average during their 15-game season. Head Coach Mike Elder in five years has an impressive 47-12 record and will likely to continue to win as long as Elder is around.

  2. Firelands is the only team in Lorain County to go 10-0 The Falcons were by far the biggest feel-good story of the year - making their first play-off appearance in school history. The team had nine returning starters (all seniors) on both offense and defense so expectations were high. Still no one would have guessed Firelands running the table especially given this team won only nine games over the previous seven years (9-61 record from 2004-2010).

Girard 56, Black River 14

The first trip to the play-offs in eight years for Black River ended abruptly as the fourth-seeded Pirates were thumped by the top seeded Girard Indians by a 56-14 at Lake High School in Hartville, Ohio in a Division 4, Region 13 semi-final matchup. You can listen to the replay online.

Girard was led by senior running back Ahmad Eggleston, senior quarterback Dan Graziano and senior receiver Branden Byrd.

The Indians took control of the game with a four touchdowns 2nd quarter. In that 12-minute period, Eggleston scored on three consecutive carries covering 34, 58 and 72 yards and finishing with 229 yards on just 12 rushes.

Graziano contributed a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter and threw touchdown passes of 37 and 68 to Byrd in the first half. Girard scored touchdowns on six of their seven first half possessions.

Black River 49, Manchester 24

Black River made a triumphant return to the OHSAA play-offs defeating visiting Manchester 49-24 last night in Sullivan, Ohio. You can listen to the replay online.

The Pirates, making their first post-season appearance since 2003, used a dominating rushing attack and an opportunistic defense to defeat the Panthers for the second time this season. Black River was victorious over Manchester in week 3 by a score of 29-28. That game Pirates QB Dakota Kuntz passed for a school-record 263 yards and four touchdowns.

Last night, Kuntz wasn't called upon to throw as often for Black River thanks to sophomore running back Andrew Vaughn who ran 23 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns. He was helped by junior Austin Phillips (13-148) who had two scores himself and senior Jake Sexton (4-48) who scored the first Pirate touchdown and later recorded an interception.

Wellington 48, Black River 21

Wellington used an opportunistic defense, strong running game and a timely passing game to defeat their arch rivals Black River 48-21. You can listen to the replay online.

The Dukes defeated the Pirates for the first time since 2007 were led by junior QB/CB Dylan Weidrick who opened the game with a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown, the first of three picks thrown by Black River quarterback Dakota Kuntz that turned into touchdowns. Weidrick also was a perfect 5-5 with two touchdowns passing along with 54 yards rushing which included several 3rd conversions in the 2nd half to ice the game.

Black River vs. Wellington preview

I will be covering high school football tonight in Wellington, Ohio as the Dukes host their arch rivals the Black River Pirates. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and sideline reporter Darrin Goats.

Keystone vs. Black River tonight

I will be covering high school football tonight from Stevenson Field as the Black River Pirates host the Keystone Wildcats. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and color commentator Darryl Maynard.

It's a Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division match-up and both teams are desperate for a win. Keystone (2-3, 0-2) is coming off two losses against Brooklyn and Columbia to start conference play while Black River (1-4, 1-1) finally notched their first win of the season against Oberlin last week after opening the year with four losses.

For Keystone, the offense is struggling. In the 21-7 loss to Columbia, the Wildcats had 50 yards of offense and their only points came on a Ryan Clement kick-off return for a TD. Clement has established himself as a dangerous return man. So far he has three touchdowns on kick-off returns and another TD on a punt return.

Offense was not in short supply last week for Black River. The Pirates had a huge 62-8 win over Oberlin. In that game, Black River scored on nine of ten offensive possession and accumulated 466 yards of offense all rushing including:
  • Jake O'Connor 13-146, 3 TDs
  • Matt Joppeck 11-124, 3 TDs
  • Andrew Vaughn 7-103, TD
  • Austin Phillips 52 yards, 2 TDs
  • Dillion White 41 yards
The Pirate defense came alive as well with five sacks and three interceptions.

The teams have met every year since the PAC started play in 2005. Black River is 4-1 during the span including a win last year at Keystone 28-21. The Wildcats lone victory during that time was a 21-12 win in 2007.

Columbia vs. Black River tonight

I will be covering high school football tonight from the sidelines of Black River High School as the Pirates host the Columbia Raiders in the Patriot Athletic Conference opener for both teams. You can tune in to 1320 AM or listen online (replay will be available online as well). I'll be working with play-by-play announcer Bob Karlovec and color commentator Darryl Maynard.

For visiting Columbia (2-1), they are off to their best start since 2006 when they won their first three games of the season. After a 30-22 setback in week 1 against Cleveland Central Catholic, the Raiders have defeated South Central 41-14 and Newbury by a score of 47-14.

Columbia has an experienced team.
  • Four seniors on their offensive line
  • Junior QB John Banyasz who has started 21 games in his varsity career
  • Junior RB Brandon Heidinger who has been a starter since he was a freshman; rushed for 1000 yards in 2009 and rushed for 110 yards and 2 TDs in the win over Newbury.
  • Returning 10 starters on both sides of the ball.
Black River has an 0-3 record for the sixth straight season. All 18 losses came against Western Reserve (34-7 in 2010), Northwestern (18-15), and Manchester (21-3).

The Pirates have some experience as well:
  • Both senior running backs Jake O’Connor and Matt Joppek return. Joppek is coming off of two straight 1,000 yard seasons.
  • LB John Sas returns this year after receiving 2nd-team all-Ohio honors in 2009.
Despite starting 0-3, the Pirates have rebounded each of the last five years to have a winning record in Patriot Athletic Conference play.

Last year, Black River was victorious at Columbia 53-20.
