14th annual WWE Royal Rumble Party

Congratulations to James Stockard and Stella Mismas as they were the big winners at Sunday night's 14th annual Girod Royal Rumble party. Both had wrestler Roman Reigns who was the 19th entrant and the last man standing in a 30-man over the top rope battle royal. Stockard had #19 in the M&M Division and Mismas had picked #19 in the Hello Kitty Division.

Having been a big winner in 2011, Mismas joins Marc Iacianci (2002, 2011) and George McBride (2005, 2007) as two-time winners.

It's the final weekend of football in West Shore Conference history. Although both Elyria Catholic and Rocky River won't be competing for the conference title, there is still a lot to play for tonight as both teams have the opportunity to punch their ticket to the play-offs.

If the season ended today, there are several Lorain County schools in the play-offs.

  • In Region 4, Midview hosts North Ridgeville while Avon travels to Perrysburg.
  • Keystone would be on the road at Port-Clinton in Region 12.

A lot can happen over the final four weeks but it doesn't hurt to peek.

We are halfway through the high school football season. At this point, you can look at teams and have a good idea of which ones are going to have a terrific record at the end of the year.

The only unbeaten team in Lorain County is the Midview Middies out of Grafton. Many thought, including me, this was going to be a transition year. Gone is longtime coach Bill Albright and 3-year starting QB Cody Callaway. Instead, new coach DJ Shaw and sophomore quarterback Dustin Crum have Midview at the top of the West Shore Conference.

Midview defeated Avon last week 49-42 which marks the Eagles first conference loss since 2009.

Whether Midview will be the last team standing is up for debate. Five of the seven teams in the WSC have four or more wins.

In the Patriot Athletic Conference, five of the six teams there have a winning record while only one team, Columbia, has a winning record in the Stripes division.

The PAC schedule is interesting. Weeks 4 and 5 are all crossover games which means a team from the Stars Division plays a team from the Stripes division. The winner of these games receive one point. Starting with week 6 of the season, it's all division games. The point is any team can win their division.

I have had a lot of luck with my picks going 56-9 over the last three weeks. My overall record of 85-23 puts me on pace for my best year ever making predictions.

At 79-24, Jeremy is also on pace for his best season ever.

This weekend's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 5 Picks

I can't believe it is already Week 5 of the High School Football season.

That's right, already halfway through the year. College football has 12 games and bye weeks. The NFL has 16 games, a bye week and the Super Bowl is in February.

High School football starts before Labor Day, has zero bye weeks and most teams will play their final game on Halloween night. Enjoy the season while it's here.

I've been a roll as of late: 39-6 in the last two weeks to up my record to 68-20. Jeremy was 13-3 last week to give him a 63-20 mark after four weeks.

Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 3 Picks

I'm always a slow starter when it comes to game predictions so I'm encouraged by a 29-14 start. However, Jeremy is off to a hot start with a 31-10 record after going 17-4 last week.

This is the last week of non-conference games.

A new record: 27 predictions this week - the highest one week total in 5 years of making predictions.  Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 1 Predictions

Can you believe it. High School Football is here again and will begin this coming Friday.

I am happy to report that Jeremy Hudgens has challenged me, not the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but challenged me for the third straight year to make predictions on each high school football game featuring schools from Lorain County and the West Shore, Southwestern, and Patriot Athletic Conference.

Good luck Jeremy. Perhaps the 3rd time is the charm. Here are my predictions with the winner listed in bold.

Just three weeks left in the regular season. There are still five teams in contention for the post-season and two conference races in Lorain County up in the air.

First the post-season, currently the Week 11 match-ups are ....
Friday November 8:
  • Massillon at Avon (Region 4: #8 vs. #1)
  • Avon Lake at Nordonia (Region 4: #6 vs. #3)
Saturday November 9:
  • Elyria at Marysville (Region 1: #11 vs. #6)
  • Black River at Beachwood (Region 15: #5 vs. #4)
  • Chippewa at Columbia (Region 15: #8 vs. #1)

Next the county races:
  • The PAC Stars Division has Black River and Keystone at the top with six points. Buckeye was in the discussion before losing to Black River last week. The Pirates are not only playing for the division title but also a play-off berth. The championship could down to week 10 with Keystone and Black River facing each other.
  • In the PAC Stripes, Columbia defeated Fairview in week 6 and are firmly in the driver's seat. Lutheran West in week 8 and Clearview in week 10 are the lone obstacles remaining.

Note: In the Patriot Athletic Conference, teams earn two points for a division win.
  • Avon leads the West Shore Conference at 4-0. With victories already against 2nd place Midview, 3rd place Elyria Catholic and 4th place North Ridgeville, this race is over.

Lorain County High School Football Week 7 Predictions

Can't believe it is week 7. Just when college and the pros get underway, high school is winding down. This game isn't winding down, I'm still going strong. Last week, my record was 15-2 to bring my season total to 83-30.

Jeremy also had a strong week going 14-3 to give him a 75-35 mark.

Tonight's WOBL game is the Keystone / Wellington rivalry. The Wildcats have three goals coming into 2013:
  1. Beat Wellington
  2. Win the Conference
  3. Qualify for the post-season

The first chance to accomplish those goals is tonight's game with the Wellington.

Wellington doesn't place as much priority on the Keystone game. The Dukes big rival is Black River. However, Wellington is still winless and every game is important.

Patriot Athletic Conference, Stars Division
Black River (4-2, 3-0, 4 points)
Keystone (4-2, 3-0, 4 points)
Buckeye (3-3, 3-0, 4 points)
Brookside (2-4, 1-2, 1 point)
Firelands (0-6, 0-3, 0 points)
Wellington (0-6, 0-3, 0 points)

Wellington Dukes
7-47 @ Norwayne (4-2)
7-42 @ Rocky River (3-3)
7-40 vs. Edison (3-3)
0-21 @ Fairview (5-1)
20-49 vs. Columbia (6-0)
21-37 @ Black River (4-2)
vs. Keystone (4-2)
vs. Buckeye (3-3)
@ Firelands (0-6)
vs. Brookside (2-4)
Keystone Wildcats
49-13 @ Monroeville (0-6)
21-38 vs. Cloverleaf (2-4)
13-28 @ Galion (6-0)
50-19 vs. Clearview (3-3)
40-28 @ Brooklyn (1-5)
47-0 vs. Firelands (0-6)
@ Wellington (0-6)
@ Brookside (2-4)
vs. Buckeye (3-3)
vs. Black River (4-2)

We have reached the halfway point of the season and I'm at a 70% success rate - a little bit off the pace of last season. However, I'm 26-4 over the last two weeks. Halfway home and my overall record stands at 68-28.

Tonight's WOBL game looks like a mismatch between 3-2 Black River and 0-5 Wellington. However, I think it's one of the best rivalries in Lorain County:
  • The schools are ten miles apart.
  • Both teams are members of the Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division since 2005. Prior to that the teams played in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Two teams have played every year since 2003.
  • Wellington has won the last two meetings. Before that Black River won three straight and six of eight meetings.
  • The road team has won five of the last seven and seven of ten.
  • Wellington is the southernmost school in Lorain county, Black River is the southernmost school in Medina county.
  • Teams feature the longest-tenured coaches in their respective counties. Al Young is in his 24 season at Black River (Medina county), Matt Stoll in his 24 season at Wellington (Lorain County).
  • Matt Stoll started his coaching career at Black River. Who did he have on his staff? Al Young who took over the program in 1990 when Stoll went to Wellington
The other big match-up tonight is in the PAC Stripes Division between 5-0 Fairview traveling to 5-0 Columbia. The Warrior defense has allowed just 6.5 points per game in the last four contests while the Raider offense has averaged 45 points per contest.

61-32 is the record for Jeremy, who was lost ground in each of the last four weeks. Thanks to Jeremy for hosting the picks last week.

Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 4 Predictions

Conference play begins this week in high school football. It's time for teams to play their familiar rivals. Week 3 of picks was decent with a 15-8 record to bring my season total to 42-24.

The week was not so good for Jeremy, who was 12-11 and fell half game behind me in the standings. I'll wait another week before I unveil the trash can image for Jeremy due to his garbage picks.

Last week's WOBL game between Northwestern and Columbia was a classic. It's part of the reason I work high school football games. The Raiders defeated the Huskies 43-42 on the scoreboard but there were no losers on that field.

This week's WOBL game between Amherst and Berea-Midpark is not as promising. Both teams enter tonight's game at 0-3.

Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 3 Predictions

The weekend is off to a crazy start.

Last night, Elyria Catholic defeated Beachwood in a game that concluded at 11:30 thanks to a lightening delay. The Panthers persevered and were victorious just like I'm going to be a winner over Jeremy the Fireman after this week.

Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

Lorain County High School Football Week 2 Picks

Very tough first week for yours truly.

A record of 11-11 in Week 1 is not the start I was looking for. Remember, last year I started 12-11 and ended up finishing the year at over 77%

For the 2nd straight year, Jeremy Hudgens will make picks as well. Mr. Hudgens started 2013 on a strong note with a 14-7 record.

The season just began. A lot of picks to be made. Tonight's winners are listed below in bold.

AIW Absolution 8: Hits and Misses

The @aiwrestling show last Sunday night was hands down the best wrestling card I ever attended. The in-ring action, the build-up and the crowd were terrific. Here are the results and below are the Hits and Misses - all AIW wrestling blog posts.

HITS
Michael Hutter vs. Tim Donst I have never seen a crowd some amped up for a match as I witnessed in this one (see Youtube video below). If these two guys wrestled an hour, no one would have minded and the crowd would have been just as hot. Hutter made his first AIW appearance in six years after spending time with WWE. Donst is a crowd favorite. Hutter had the beach balls, Donst had the masks. The action inside the ring delivered as well.

With a name like Barkevious Mingo, he has to be a Dawg

The newest member of the Cleveland Browns
Barkevious Mingo (right) poses with
NFL Commissioner Roget Goddell
The Cleveland Browns selected Barkevious Mingo with the 6th pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. The defensive end from LSU recorded 38 tackles (8.5 for losses) and 4.5 sacks in 2012. Mingo is a quick pass rusher at 6-4, 241 pounds, and ran 4.6 40-yard dash. He was 2nd-team all-SEC as a junior.

In 3 seasons, Mingo recorded a total of 15 sacks to go with 119 career tackles, 4 forced fumbles and 11 pass deflections.

Although he played DE in college, the Browns would use him as an OLB. With Paul Kruger at one OLB and Mingo at the other OLB, the Browns hope they can now rush the passer which Cleveland hasn't had since Jamir Miller.
